Removing GST is division, not subtraction

To find the taxable value inside a GST-inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate). At 18%, a ₹1,180 inclusive price contains ₹1,000 of value and ₹180 of tax. Subtracting 18% of ₹1,180 gives ₹967.60, which is wrong every time and wrong in the same direction.

CGST, SGST and IGST

A supply within your own state splits equally into central and state GST. An inter-state supply carries a single integrated GST at the full rate. The total is identical; only the ledger and the return differ.

Which rate applies

Rates follow the HSN code for goods and the SAC for services, across 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Classification is the part worth getting right — the arithmetic is trivial by comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove GST from an inclusive amount?
Divide by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For 18%, divide by 1.18. The formula is amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate).
When does IGST apply instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST applies to inter-state supplies and to imports. Intra-state supplies split into CGST and SGST at half the rate each.
Is GST calculated on the discounted price?
Yes, where the discount is shown on the invoice and is known at the time of supply. Post-supply discounts have their own conditions under section 15(3).
