Raise the instalment by this much every year

What this assumes, and why it is wrong

It assumes the same return every single month. No equity fund behaves that way. The real path swings widely either side, and the order in which those swings arrive changes the outcome — particularly near the end, when the corpus is largest. Treat the figure as a planning aid, not a forecast.

Why stepping up matters

A flat SIP loses ground to inflation and to your own rising income. Raising the instalment even 5% a year lifts the final corpus considerably, because the later instalments still get years to compound.

Costs and tax

Expense ratios and exit loads reduce the actual return and are not modelled. Long term gains on equity funds above the annual exemption are taxed at 12.5% after a year.

Frequently asked questions

What return should I assume?
Be conservative. Historical equity returns do not guarantee future ones, and an optimistic assumption produces a plan that quietly fails.
Is SIP safer than a lump sum?
It spreads the entry price, which reduces timing risk. It does not reduce market risk.
What happens if I stop midway?
The units already bought stay invested and keep growing. Only future contributions stop.
