Four dates, four percentages

15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March — each cumulative, not incremental. A presumptive taxpayer under 44AD or 44ADA pays the whole amount by 15 March instead.

The safe harbour

Section 234C accepts 12% by the first date and 36% by the second in place of 15% and 45%, provided the shortfall did not arise from underestimating. It is a genuine concession, not a rounding tolerance.

234B versus 234C

234C is interest for deferring an instalment — three months per shortfall on the first three dates, one month on the last. 234B is interest for paying less than 90% of the liability by year end, running at 1% a month from 1 April until the tax is paid.

Late capital gains

Where capital gains or lottery income arise after an instalment date, the tax on them is excluded from 234C if paid in the remaining instalments. That protection does not extend to ordinary business income.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to pay advance tax?
Anyone whose tax liability after TDS is ₹10,000 or more. Resident senior citizens without business income are exempt.
What if my income estimate changes mid-year?
Revise it and pay the shortfall in the next instalment. 234C is charged on the deferment, not on the revision itself.
Does TDS count towards advance tax?
Yes. Advance tax is computed on the liability net of TDS and TCS credit.
